The e-health card, the Health Professional Card and the Security Module Card – three cards for your health

The rollout of the e-health card is the world’s largest IT project. It connects

  • 80 million insured persons
  • 200,000 physicians
  • 20,000 pharmacies
  • 2,000 hospitals and clinics
  • and about 250 health insurers

The e-health card, the Health Professional Card and the Security Module Card – three cards for your health
Morpho is developing all three variants of the health card. The smooth intermeshing of the three cards and the holistic view represented by a health telematics system with smart cards is reflected in the product portfolio.

e-health card – The main difference in appearance between the new e-health card and that of the previous health card is the photo on the front. The back of the card bears a logo indicating the validity of insurance coverage throughout the EU.

The microprocessor chip is the heart of the card. The chip securely stores the patient’s data in encrypted form. The patient data is divided into administrative and medical data.

HPC – Depending on the authorization principle used, physicians or pharmacists can use their HPC card to access certain data. The patient’s personal PIN number provides additional protection from unauthorized access. It takes the patient’s permission for a health professional to access the patient’s sensitive medical data.

Data can be queried only if the two cards are used in combination.

SMC – The Secure Module Card is a security module designed to ensure that a card reader is genuine, for example.

Applications on the e-health card
The applications available on the electronic health card can be divided into voluntary and mandatory applications.

Mandatory applications are identical for all insured persons. That includes the transmission of patient data with the e-health card, the electronic receipt and redemption of a prescription with the e-health card and the use of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) on the back of the card.

The insured person alone decides on the use of the voluntary medical applications. Only with his or her permission can emergency data be stored on the card, for example, or a record of medication be generated by a treating physician or a pharmacist.

The mandatory applications as well as emergency data and medication records will be available immediately after the country-wide rollout of the e-health card. Additional medical applications including electronic physician letters, patient receipts and electronic patient records will be introduced step-by-step.
